DOHC is the abbreviation for Double Overhead Camshaft engine. It is a type of engine which involves two camshaft units fitted inside the cylinder head over the combustion engine. Also known as Dual Overhead Camshaft engine, it has two camshafts out of which one takes care of the input valves while the other unit looks after the exhaust valves.
History of DOHC
The introduction of DOHC type engine in a vehicle took place in 1910. By the 1920s, companies started employing it in high-quality cars. Using DOHC engines in racing cars, acting as a form of advertising. In the 1960s, Fiat came up with its entire range of vehicles with DOHC engines. By the end of the 20th century and the starting of the 21st century, every upcoming vehicle came up with DOHC engines.
Design and structure of DOHC
A typical DOHC engine consists of two camshafts in each cylinder. A straight engine thus has two camshafts and a V engine has four camshafts. A majority of DOHC engines have four valves inside every cylinder but some engines also have two valves. The valves are operated through a tappet by the camshaft. The design allows better flow of the mixture through to the engine because of the greater angle between the valves.
Advantages of DOHC
- Since there are more camshafts, valves can be arranged in the required position for increased outputs.
- Better control can be exercised over the valves so these engines are much more efficient than their single-camshaft counterparts.
- These engines are much more powerful than SOHC.
- The performance of the engine can be enhanced by altering and managing the position of the spark plug.
- DOHC engines allow tuning of the valve timings for increased performance.
