Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, abbreviated as JAXA, is an aeronautical and space science research agency funded by both the government of Japan and non-governmental entities. This independent administrative space agency is under The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology (Govt. of Japan).
History
JAXA was established by merging three aerospace organizations in Oct 2003 viz.
- The National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan (ESTD. 1955)
- The Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ESTD. 1964)
- The National Space Development Agency of Japan (ESTD. 1969)
In Feb 2005 the JAXA Vision or JAXA 2025 (road map) was announced.
Structure
According to article 9 of chapter 2 of the Law concerning JAXA, The agency consists of a president as executive head, a vice-president, 2 General Auditors, and not more than 7 Executive Directors. Currently, YAMAKAWA Hiroshi is serving as the president of JAXA.

With the slogan “Explore to Realize”, JAXA strives to realize an affluent society by using aeronautical technological developments. With responsibility and pride, JAXA strives to provide jubilation for human society and aspire for creation.
Offices & Field Centers
The head office of JAXA is situated in Tokyo. There are also numerous JAXA field centers throughout Japan, for example, in Ibaraki, Kanagawa, Kagoshima, Saitama, Okayama, Nagano, etc.

- Washington
- Paris
- Moscow
- Houston
- Bangkok
Missions
JAXA operates to implement the following missions as the purpose of its creation-
- Utilizing space through Earth Observation Satellites
- Research on Fundamental Aeronautical Technologies and Space Science
- Developing Space Transportation system through launch vehicles
In this pursuit, JAXA is dedicated to improving the environmental condition and promoting sustainable development.
Educational Activities
JAXA Space Education Centre started its activity in 2005. It supports formal education, informal education and experience-based education to support students who are interested in science & technology, especially Space Science.
