The Teacher Eligibility Test, TET, is held twice a year under Government regulations. It is the minimum criteria the candidate needs to fulfill to get the teacher job in a Government or private school.
The test helps in choosing the best candidate for the teacher job. The Government conducts the test both at the national and state level. The test helps in appointing the teacher for class 1 to class VIII.
Objectives of TET
- It maintains the standard and sets the benchmark for appointing the best teachers.
- The primary aim is to improve the education system in the country.
- It helps the state and central Government maintain the standard for hiring quality resources.
Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria depend upon the state to state, but specific measures need to be fulfilled irrespective of the state:
- The minimum age is 18 years, and there is no limit to the upper age.
- The candidate should have a 12th standard passing certificate with a minimum 45% aggregate.
- The candidate must have a diploma in the teacher training course or a Bachelor of Education degree.
What are the document requirements?
Below are the mandatory documents required to appear for the test:
- All the educational documents – the 12th passing certificate and the graduation passing certificates.
- Valid photo ID proof along with the latest photographs.
- Caste certificate
- Disability certificate
TET Syllabus
The TET is divided into paper one and paper two. It is a multiple-choice question having one mark for each question. There is no negative marking.
Paper 1
Paper 1 is applicable for candidates who are planning to teach the students from class 1 to class V. The paper consist of the following pattern:

- Language 1
- Language 2
- Mathematics
- Environmental Studies
Paper 2
Paper 2 is applicable for candidates who want to appear for teaching class VI to class VIII. It consists of:
